Accused guilty of murder in death of Genne and Teresa Nolin

A young man on trial for killing a couple near Meadow Lake, Sask., was found guilty of first degree murder today in a Battleford courtroom.

The judge found he was clear of mind enough to devise a plan.

Genne and Teresa Nolin were shot and killed as they slept in their home in Rapid View.

The convicted man was 17 years old at the time and cannot be named.

A 16-year-old is already serving time for killing the Nolins. He was 14 years old at the time of the crime and also cannot be named. Last year he was sentenced to six years in custody, the maximum sentence possible for a youth.

In January he testified in the older teen's trial. He said they were drinking together and the older teen asked him to join a gang and kill Genne and Teresa. The couple were found dead in October 2012.

The older killer's lawyer, George Combe told CBC News he's satisfied with the decision and that it's fair.

Combe requested a psychiatric evaluation prior to the sentencing in September, which the judge agreed to.

"The law is pretty clear that we're going to be looking at his background, his aptitude, his understanding, and whether or not he really was functioning at the level of a 17 year old at the time or perhaps somewhat younger," Combe said.

The lawyer hopes the man will serve his time in a youth facility. He said the 19-year-old is apologetic and is working to turn his life around.
