Nenshi defends Rick Hanson as ex-police chief investigated

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi is jumping to the defence of former police chief Rick Hanson.

Hanson says he did nothing wrong when he sent emails about the assignment of new officers in District 5 on his last days with the Calgary Police Service.

The emails came as he announced his Progressive Conservative candidacy in a riding that included some of the same area.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is looking into whether there was a conflict of interest.

Nenshi says Hanson did nothing wrong.

"I live in northeast Calgary. I followed the election very, very carefully. And I never heard one breath of 'oh, there's extra officers here because of this guy,'" he said.

"Guys, there's nothing here. There's nothing here beyond clearing your desk after leaving a job you've been in for many, many years. This guy's been nothing but an incredibly dedicated public servant."

Nenshi also said ASIRT is a great independent investigative body and it must be allowed to do its job.
