Ontario man 'won't go back' after Mexico attack

An Ontario man says he was viciously attacked last spring near the same five-star resort in Mexico where a Calgary woman was badly beaten over the weekend.

Sheila Nabb, 37, was found with extensive facial injuries in the elevator of the Hotel Riu Emerald Bay in Mazatlan, where she was staying with her husband. Her family said Tuesday she has been removed from a medically induced coma but faces a long recovery from her injuries.

News of Nabb's injuries sent chills through Scott Giddy and his wife Sarah, a couple from Fergus, Ont., who say they will never return to Mexico after Scott was struck over the head outside a restaurant near the same resort in March of last year.

"I just felt sick," Sarah Giddy told CBC's Jeff Semple after reading about Nabb's injuries on CBC.ca. "Knowing that something has happened again at that hotel and now that she's at the same hospital where Scott was treated. My heart goes out to her and her family. It's just absolutely horrible."

The Giddys went to Mexico with Sarah’s sister and a friend for March break last year. They had stayed at another Riu resort in Los Cabos on other trips had been to Mexico many times before and felt they would be safe.

"We thought 'hey this is a five-star resort, it looks nice,'" said Sarah.

Four days into their trip, the couple visited a restaurant down the beach from their resort. Inside they recognized other guests from their resort.

Toward the end of dinner, Scott went to use the bathroom then stepped outside the restaurant to visit some vendors he saw on his way inside.

Sarah didn't know her husband planned to step outside.

Scott told CBC News he recalls stepping outside the restaurant, but his next memory is waking up in a hospital eight days later.

"I can remember going to the washroom, and that's where any recollection of what happens fades away," he said. "I have no recollection of how I got injured. I have no recollection of what occurred outside of that restaurant … I don't remember any confrontation with anyone. Nothing."

Sarah recalls the moment someone ran to her table to tell her that her husband had been hurt.

"A woman came running to the table and said 'emergency, emergency, your husband.' We ran outside and that's where we found Scott on the ground, there was a huge pool of blood. He was standing against the building and he had blood pouring out his left ear. Pouring like a tap."

Sarah was frantic and Scott was unable to tell her how he had sustained his head wound.

"I just started screaming," said Sarah. "Call 911, call the police, call an ambulance. There were a few taxi drivers out there and one kind of laughed and said, "Police don't come to things like this.'"

Scott had suffered a serious brain injury which doctors later said was caused by a blow to the head. Both his eardrums had also burst.

Eventually a cab driver did take the couple to what Sarah thought was a hospital but was in fact a private clinic. Upon arrival, Sarah was asked for her credit card, which she handed over without hesitation in her state of panic.

A doctor at the clinic examined Scott, determined he had a brain injury and said he need surgery and could only be treated in hospital.

Scott was eventually taken to Sharp Hospital in Mazatlan by ambulance, where the couple say he received excellent care. Surgeons there relieved pressure caused by bleeding in his brain then put him in a medically induced coma. In total, Scott spent 10 days in hospital.

During that time, Sarah was pursued by bill collectors who told the couple to pay them in cash deposits to a bank account in Texas.

"They followed us to our hotel," said Sarah. "We had to switch hotels. They said if we don't pay cash, we're cutting off your husband's care."

The couple did have insurance, which covered the cost of Scott's care but did not deter the bill collectors.

In the end, the couple was charged $4,700 for care at the first clinic and a hospital bill of $45,000. The couple believe the charges from the first clinic amount to fraud. Sarah said she never signed a credit card slip.

The couple, who have two children, now feel they were the targets of a scam in which cab drivers are paid to deliver tourists to a private clinic. They also believe a cab driver took part in the attack and say the driver who transported them was paid cash for delivering them to the clinic.

"He must have been involved with that to some degree," said Scott. "If the clinic is willing to let cab drivers know that if you bring us patients that are hurt to our clinic, we're going to give you cash for that."

The couple now say they will never return to Mexico. Scott has made a recovery but did lose his sense of smell.

"We have nothing against the country," said Scott. "We met some wonderful people down there, some wonderful locals but it's just way too dangerous. We would never go there again."

    His wife agrees.

"A disturbing thing is hearing people say if you stay on the resort you're fine, but that's not true,” said Sarah. “Even if you stay on the resort and you need medical assistance you could wind up in the same situation that we were in where if you don't have cash, you don't get care."

You people who say this happens in Canada must not live here. When someone is hurt, we help. When you need medical attention, your government is ensuring HELICOPTERS can get their in very quick times. I don't know which Canada other people live in.

not true, i was seriously hurt and turned away from calgary hospitals for not having insurance, that has never happened to me in the states.
      • Up2Me 4 months ago
Rebecca, if you're American and you don't have insurance while out of the country, you're an idiot.
If you're Canadian then healthcare should have covered it. So.....

A couple of friends from the U.S were staying at a resort in the same area and went to dinner one evening at a popular tourist restaurant., One of the guys steps out for a smoke and next thing this guy comes at him out of nowhere with a steel pipe , luckily he got a side glimpse of him coming and was able to put up his hands just in time to cover the side of his face from a baseball like swing that would have likely killed him. The guy takes off and left him bleeding with a broken wrist. The cab drivers offered to take him to hospital, a waiter from the restaurant told em not to cause its a scam, so he didn't. The next day he tries to leave and the hotel staff confiscated his luggage cause they said he owed a local clinic $2500 tried to argue with them only to finally realize this guys were all in it.. He left his luggage behind and caught the next flight out with a swollen face anf broken iced wrist. This has to be 8+ yrs ago.People need to be informed about scams like this, When I heard about this poor gal, I knew it had to be the same scam . The resort staff are involved too, they are in kahoots with the cabbies, crooks and clinics. The crooks kno everything about you and what you have by the 2nd day. The cleaning staff scout out tourists through their belongings for them to target

I work for a travel insurance company. The scam you speak of is very common. There have been instances of tourists not being able to leave the country until they pay the medical bills. Then we reimburse them after the fact but hopefully they have the means to pay the bills.

The Cda Gov advises high degree of caution traveling to Mexico & against non-essential travel. Why are people still holidaying there? The Gov warnings are serious & for our protection. Mexico is a beautiful country & most citizens law abiding however its Gov cant control the criminal element. Mexico will be there a long time wait till 'after' the Cda Gov says it is safe. Low cost travel is great but not if you have to play Russian roulette with your health & life. I have sympathy for those injured abroad but they put themselves in harms way it is a horrible price to pay. i hope others will see the folly in holidaying in Mexico at this time. How many injuries & deaths will it take?
      • KARLITO 4 months ago
sure it's difficult for the Gov't to control the criminal element when you have some members of the police force in on the scams, beatings and murders. Mexico, like a lot of "third world" countries are steep in corruption. turning a blind eye is part of that culture as well. they have a policy in these countries with is.... silver or lead. take the money or take the bullet.

it is only the northern border towns that are under that travel alert

The only ones that go to Mexico now are the cheapskates who can't afford to holiday among civilized people. But they want to brag how they went on a "holiday". I've seen enough of Mexicans in Las Vegas to know that I would NEVER go to Mexico.

I agree it can happen anywhere but there are countries where it can happen easier. Maybe Mexico is one of those countries, I don't know because I have never been there. I have however travelled a lot in SE Asia and have never felt threated yet.

Vietname is the safest SE Asian country to travel in. No terrorists (Phillipines), a stable government unlike Cambodia and Thailand, super friendly welcoming people with smiles and of course..... the food is just fantastic!

If Mexico wants to make their country a place to welcome foreign visitors, they have to take these complaints seriously and clean up their act. The only thing they will listen to is if we all stopped traveling to their country.

i was at the Riu Palace Mayan in Playa De Carmen 2 weeks ago , my children got into a very minor dispute with a vendor over a pair or 4 dollar sunglasses, when i approached him to ask him the details he challenged me to a fight and then told me if he saw me outside the resort he would "kill me" he said the police would do nothing because your "only a tourist" i reported him to security and he was removed and allegedly banned from the resort. Seems some locals feel omnipotent regarding crime and threats against tourists.

I will tell you another story. A few friends who went there had their stuff "gone" from the hotel rooms (a camera, passpost, jean jacket) conveniently on the last day of their stay (different resorts, several years). After they complained at the front desk the manager called the cleaning crew. "Did you take it"? "Of course not"- answered the crew. "well, you see they didn't take it. you could go to the police" said the manager "but the matter will not be resolved quickly, so if you want to charge them you will have to lose your flight". The guy with the stolen passport had a lot of trouble to get a duplicate, but of course, you just give up your missing item to get out of there. I just feel sorry for decent Mexicans who live there.

My wife and I were on a vacation in Mexico 3 years ago with a few friends at a very popular resort. To make a long story short, we were attacked while relaxing on the beach by 4 Mexicans threatening us with knives. I can tell you the it was the last time I went in Mexico and will never go back. It's really not worth it!

Travel agents must get a nice kickback from the Mexican hotels. What the hotels lose there they regain in shaking down the tourist.
Mexico has changed. Who wants to be on constant vigil, It's supposed to be relaxing instead
      of a worry.

I am thinking about taking the Family down to Mexico for a couple of weeks. We will be driving a small tank armed with 50 calibre gun on a torret the kids are going to have AK47s, my wife and I will be for the most part unarmed other than flack jackets and a small greneade launcher that I will carry on my shoulder. I am trying to convince my wife it will be safe enough to bring grandma but she says no way unless I can attach a bazooka to her wheel chair, "yeah right!!". The argument continues at home about gram's but the live ammo should be hear next week and as soon as it arrives I am gone even if it's just me and the kids.

It seems that Mexico is a corrupt country when it comes to the police and the legal system when it comes to tourists. They want our money, and don't give a hell when tourists are harmed. DON'T GO TO MEXICO! A savage place to visit and I hope the Canadian Government will do something. But I doubt they will.

I worked at a mountain guide service that used to offer trips to climb the Mexican volcanoes. They stopped offering trips to Mexico sometime in the late 90s because of too many run-ins with corrupt police officials. There are many many places that you can go that don't have this sort of problem with corruption (at least corruption that directly affects tourists). I hope Mexico feels a dent in it's tourism so it has one more reason to clean up it's act. Thoughts and prayers for the injured woman and her family.

a year ago, my wife and i took a cab back from shopping to the resort. a 15 minute drive. the cabby stppoed halfway and asked for 65$ u.s. i of course refused and asked how much we owed so far because we wanted out. he said he would call the company to find out because his "meter" wasnt working well. 5 minutes later the cops showed up and told us to pay the cabbie. i asked what our fare was for going this far. the officer told us it was 65 to the cabbie and 100 to them because of the call and if we didnt pay it all we were going to jail. i paid of courseand we walked the remainder. they love tourists down there. love em. have fun.

We are only hearing about attacks on Canadian tourists and occasionally Americans, but what about attacks on tourists from other countries. Most news coming from Mexico is suppressed. There is alot more crime going on there and we don't hear about it b/c its bad for tourism.
