Ottawa couple weds in craft store

Robert Friedman and Susan Scruton wed on Saturday in a craft store in Kanata.

An Ottawa couple that loves to quilt held their wedding ceremony at their favourite craft store in Kanata.

The couple wed on Saturday and said there is something fitting about tying the proverbial knot in a place that's all about stitching together different pieces of fabric to tell a seamless story.

Robert Friedman and Susan Scruton started quilting a few years ago and quickly fell in love with the activity.

"I think part of it is we're a bit older now," said Scruton.

"We're weaving together, patching together, a lot of different parts of lives," she said.

The groom's sons said they were surprised to learn about the venue.

"The location, I was definitely not expecting," said Jason Friedman.

"It's good to share this experience with people you care about in a cool twist on tradition," said Daniel Friedman.

Michele Santerre offered her shop, The Running Stitch, for the ceremony, knowing her regular customers are creative in nature.

"They like to create their own patterns and they don't follow the rules necessarily," said Santerre.

Scruton and Friedman normally work on individual quilting projects, but will help each other out for their next project: a wedding quilt.

The newly married couple will leave for their honeymoon trip to Newfoundland at the end of the month.
