Police search for missing boater in Cloud Lake area

RCMP divers have found the body of the boater who went missing Friday in Cloud Lake, southeast of Middleton, N.S.

The body of Burpee Leslie Banks, 67, of Annapolis County, was discovered in the lake at about 5:20 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Fire crews and search and rescue teams began looking for the man Friday night after his boat was found abandoned in the water close to a boat launch on Cloud Lake at around 7 p.m.

"The person that called it in noticed the boat anchored, noticed a life-jacket and oars in the boat and a vehicle nearby, so this gentleman looked around, didn't see anyone nearby so grew concerned," said Const. Brenda Elson.

Banks was last seen leaving his house around 11 a.m. Friday, Elson said.

Malcolm Francis, fire chief with Annapolis Royal Volunteer Fire Department, said they had a boat on the lake by 9 p.m. The search went until 3 a.m. Saturday and resumed later in the morning.

Dozens of search and rescue responders from as far away as Lunenburg and Digby were searching the isolated area, which is about 10 minutes from a main road.
