SGI uncovers privacy violations in Lestock, Saskatchewan

SGI says a worker at an independent agent's office in Lestock, Saskatchewan improperly looked up licence plate information on 18 people, in violation of privacy protocols.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance is the provincial Crown corporation that oversees motor vehicle licensing. In many areas the service is done through local companies which act as agents for SGI.

On Tuesday, Earl Cameron — a vice president at SGI — said an employee of an independent license issuer in Lestock, Sask., was caught looking up client information.

Cameron said the privacy breach was not done for malicious intent, adding the worker was suspended and the company's relationship with SGI has been put on probation.

If there are further problems, SGI said the agency's contract will be terminated.

The handling of personal information has been an ongoing issue in Saskatchewan and the province's Privacy Commissioner has reported that improvements are needed.
