Students asked to enter War of 1812 video contest

A national organization dedicated to Canadian history is calling on all middle and high school students to create one-minute videos commemorating the War of 1812.

The Historica-Dominion Institute is behind the "Make Your Own Heritage Minute" Contest.

To enter, students have to create a one minute video on the War of 1812.

Jeremy Diamond is the director of the Toronto-based institute. He said the institute was looking for a way to get young people involved in the commemoration of the war.

"We know that it is a significant moment in history to commemorate," he said. "I think we're going to find a variety in the submissions."

The institute is looking for creative and diverse entries.

"We want to be able to see different characters be represented. So we don't want them all to be about Laura Secord. We want to see if somebody could take sort of a unique perspective something that's a little different story being told about the war of 1812," Diamond said.

Diamond said a number of entries will be broadcast online. The deadline to submit an entry to Historica-Dominion is March 31.
