War of 1812 celebrations planned in Essex

The Town of Essex is planning to celebrate the War of 1812 this summer. But organizers will have to pay for the festivities with less money than expected.

The plan is for a tall ship to visit Colchester harbour for two weeks and offer cruises.

There would also be re-enactments and musicians entertaining visitors.

However, last night, town council voted to reduce the town's portion of the funding from 49, 000 to $25,000.

"It will not do as much as what we had hoped, but it will get us to the point of knowing roughly where," chair of the planning committee Linda Iler said. "It will give us a chance to secure the tall ships."

Iler's committee will have to do fundraising now to make up the shortfall.
