Wildfires spread across 900 hectares

Officials are hoping cooler weather will help control fires burning in southeastern Manitoba but say it's too early to tell if they can be brought under control today.

"It looks a lot better this morning but it looked that way yesterday morning and then the winds came up," said Duane Boutang, reeve of the Rural Municipality of Piney.

Fortunately, the area was spared from the powerful winds that swept through other parts of southern Manitoba Sunday night.

Boutang said the fire around the village of Badger is "somewhat under control" and officials will determine later today whether residents can return.

However, a travel ban in the area remains in effect. Boutang said everyone should stay away, especially people on ATVs.

"If you're not carrying anything that can put a fire out immediately, it can get away virtually in minutes and you're done with," he said.

He estimates the fire in the RM of Piney covers about 900 hectares.
