14-year-old accuses Miami-Dade Schools resource officer of dislocating her shoulder: reports

A 14-year-old girl had her shoulder dislocated and thumb broken during an altercation with a Miami-Dade Schools police officer at a Miami Gardens school, her family’s lawyer announced.

Attorney Larry Handfield on Tuesday accused an officer of body slamming Anez Donaldson at Myrtle Grove K-8 Center on Feb. 28, WSVN 7 News reported.

Last week’s altercation started with an quarrel between Donaldson and an adult. Eventually, it led to the Miami Gardens teen’s arrest. She’s charged with resisting an officer with violence and battery on a police officer.

The officers’ retelling of events and Donaldson’s recollection don’t match up. Handfield said authorities are trying to cover up the truth, WSVN reported.

‘Don’t f****** touch me’

What Miami-Dade Schools police officers wrote in Donaldson’s arrest report painted a starkly different picture of what she said occurred.

According to the report, Donaldson was arguing with an adult at the school when she approached them in an “aggressive manner.”

Officer A. Green tried to escort her away from the adult, but Donaldson “intentionally” pushed Green away and said, “Don’t f****** touch me,” the report read.

Green proceeded to try to take Donaldson into custody, but she was allegedly resisting by tensing her arms and bracing, the report read.

Multiple other officers joined in to help Green as she continued to resist.

“[Donaldson] kicked and pulled away from the officers when officers attempted to place [her] into handcuffs and then into my patrol car,” Officer N. Mendez wrote in the report.

Officers took her to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

The report did not mention if Donaldson suffered any injuries during the arrest. It also did not go into detail how exactly Green and other officers tried to put her into custody, whether that included a body slam or not.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools said in a statement it is “...aware of an incident involving an officer and a student at Myrtle Grove K-8 Center that occurred last week. The Miami-Dade Schools Police Department is currently investigating this matter.”

Contrasting narratives

Donaldson and her lawyer’s accounts indicated that the core events leading to her arrest and subsequent charges were incorrect or misleading.

During the press conference, Handfield said Donaldson did not know the man who came up to her during the argument with the adult was a police officer, NBC 6 reported.

“Unbeknownst to her, she pushed the person back as far as the hand, not realizing it was a police officer, and the police officer, in an aggressive manner, picked her up, as the evidence will show, body slammed her, laid on top of her,” Handfield said.

After being body slammed, Donaldson said she could not kick nor push the officers, as they asserted, because she couldn’t see anything while lying on the floor.

“I was just trying to gasp for air because I couldn’t breathe at the time,” she said.

After the altercation, she said she didn’t get medical treatment for hours and was in great pain from her injuries, which still hurt and affects her sleep.

The law office said it would be preparing a lawsuit and seeking the officers’ body camera footage, which will corroborate their side of the story.

“We want to seek justice, we want the public to be made aware of what happened, and we want to hold those accountable to be responsible so that something like this doesn’t happen,” Handfield said.
