Bad Boys (1995)

Martin Lawrence and Will Smith in Bad Boys
Sony Pictures Releasing

It’s 2024, and audiences still love Bad Boys. Last weekend, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence teamed up for a fourth time in Bad Boys: Ride or Die. The film jump-started the summer box office with a $56 million U.S. debut. If you enjoyed Bad Boys 4, now is the perfect time to go back to the beginning and revisit the movie that started it all: Bad Boys.

Narcotics detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are partners in the Miami-Dade Police Department. The duo recently confiscated and seized $100 million worth of heroin. However, the drugs were then stolen from a police vault. Who did it? That’s what Mike and Marcus need to find out, and they need to do it fast because Internal Affairs plans to shut down their department in 72 hours. Directed by Michael Bay, Bad Boys is an enthralling buddy cop movie with great chemistry between the leads. Also, it’s a Bay film, so expect a lot of explosions.

Drive (2011)

Ryan Gosling sits behind the wheel of a car.
FilmDistrict

You’ve seen the memes. We all know that Ryan Gosling in Drive is literally me. With the jokes behind us, Drive features Gosling’s best performance as an actor. Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, Drive stars Gosling as The Driver, a stunt double and mechanic who moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals. No one is better behind the wheel than the Driver. He’s a stone-cold killer. However, the Driver does have a soft spot for his neighbor, Irene (Maestro‘s Carey Mulligan), and her young son, Benicio (Kaden Leos).

The Driver cares so much about Irene that he’s willing to help her husband (Oscar Isaac) rob a pawn shop. However, the heist goes wrong, forcing the Driver to take on violent criminals to protect Irene and Benicio. Drive is visually stunning and features a mesmerizing score that will be on your next Spotify playlist. If that’s not enough, Gosling is the coolest person alive. Need I say more?
