5 arrested after man seen with gun in Old Ottawa East

Ottawa police arrested five people Tuesday afternoon following a report of a man with a gun near the intersection of Hawthorne Avenue and Concord Street in Old Ottawa East.

Police received a call at around 12:15 p.m. that a man had been seen carrying a gun in the neighbourhood.

The man returned to a residence in the area, police said. Officers arrested five people when they arrived on scene.

Thierry Trueman lives nearby and went outside to get his mail at around 1 p.m. when he said a police officer carrying an assault rifle told him to go back inside.

"I immediately ran upstairs and took a look outside and there were SWAT teams around and they seemed to be surrounding the apartment behind me," Trueman said.

No shots fired

Police confirmed one man was carrying a gun but could not say whether it was an actual firearm or a replica.

There's no word yet on whether charges have been laid, and the names or ages of those taken into custody have not been revealed.

No shots were fired and no one was injured during the operation, police said.
