5 things to follow at Dufferin County council’s upcoming meeting

It’s that time again — Dufferin County Council is meeting on Thursday at the W & M Edelbrock Centre (30 Centre St.) in Orangeville to discuss new plans, project updates and funding allocations.

The next council meeting will take place in September.

1. Proclamations, delegations and presentations

Dufferin County will be proclaiming Sept. 9 as fetal alcohol spectrum awareness day. Members of Dufferin Child and Family Services will attend council to accept the proclamation and give a brief talk about fetal alcohol spectrum.

The Western Ontario Wardens’ Caucus will be speaking to council about its not-for-profit organization, which represents 15 upper- and single-tier municipalities in southwestern Ontario. Its goal is to enhance overall well-being in rural and small urban communities. Executive director Kate Burns Gallagher will delegate the 2024-2025 strategic priorities.

Government relations, strategic communications and management consultant advisory firm StrategyCorp Inc. is presenting an update on the Governance and Service Review.

2. Work updates and plans

The county will be investigating Dufferin Rd. 7 to implement a community safety zone. Additionally, the speed limit on Dufferin Rd, 11 and Dufferin Rd. 124 will be temporally reduced to 40 km/h for three years. This is to help support ongoing changes to Town of Shelburne infrastructure.

3. Recommendation to be adopted by council

Discussions around the eradication of all forms of racism have been increasing in town council and committee meetings. The diversity, equity and inclusion community advisory committee recommends that Dufferin County council encourage all levels of government to eradicate all forms of racism, and this motion be sent to Dufferin County’s MP, MPP and all municipalities. The committee is looking for council to adopt this motion.

4. Funding updates

Council will be asked to enact the Municipal Funding Agreement for the Canada Community-Building Fund Agreement by-law.

Those who are on the housing reserve list have a change to be approved for an additional housing allowance for eligible applicants up to $100,000. The costs will be funded through the reserve for social housing.

Dufferin County will also be speaking about the 2024 Dufferin Oaks funding.

5. Health Space request

Shelburne Centre for Health Space is requesting that council approves its proposal for additional space. It is looking for council to authorize a lease agreement of $1 per year for the requested space.
