6-year-old boy recovering from serious injuries after being hit by SUV in Pierce County

Ryder Muir is itching to get outside.

Until then, his Nintendo Switch will keep him company while he recovers at his home in Tacoma.

“He likes Pokemon, Minecraft and Mario. All things Nintendo Switch is his jam right now,” Nik Muir, his father, said.

Ryder Muir suffered multiple injuries after an SUV struck him June 16 in Orting. The 6-year-old’s father said they were getting ready to leave a friend’s house in the Hidden Lakes neighborhood when the crash happened.

Sometime in the afternoon that day, Nik Muir was saying goodbye to his friend when Ryder Muir slipped out of the garage on his bike. Shortly after, a Toyota 4Runner hit the child on the road.

“Ryder was nonresponsive, not breathing and didn’t have a pulse,” Nik Muir said. “I was mind blown by what was going on. I was freaking out.”

Orting Police Chief Devon Gabreluk told The News Tribune that officers were dispatched around 4:50 p.m. The driver had no signs of intoxication and was not traveling at a fast speed. No charges are pending.

First responders sent Ryder Muir to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma. Later that night he moved to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Ryder Muir had three fractures – one on his head and one on each side of his pelvis. He had multiple cuts to his face. He had a broken rib, a torn lung and a laceration on his liver. Nik Muir said the biggest injury is his son’s pelvis.

Ryder Muir’s pelvis experienced a “massive” amount of torsion, making it offset and unstable, according to a GoFundMe page created for him.

Nik Muir said his son has been in good spirits. Ryder Muir will be in a wheelchair for about five more weeks. He has been going to physical and occupational therapy. He will undergo surgery later to remove the pins from his pelvis.

“All things considered I’d say he’s doing incredible,” Nik Muir said.
