Hold and secures at eight schools in Brampton Friday and a lockdown at another were sparked by a replica firearm that left a 17-year-old girl injured, Peel police say.

The measures, put in place as a precaution before noon Friday, have since been lifted, police say.

The schools included: Grenoble PES, Greenbriar PES, Goldcrest PES, Holy Name of Mary CSS, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Jean Brebeuf CES, Judith Nyman PSS, Chinguacousy PSS and Williams Parkway PES. Police originally said all nine schools were in a hold and secure, but later said Judith Nyman was under a lockdown.

Peel police first said in a tweet that officers were responding to reports of a youth suffering from a possible gunshot wound around 11:30 a.m. in the area of Central Park Drive and Grenoble Boulevard in Brampton.

Const. Sarah Patten told reporters at the scene that police didn't know if the weapon used was a real gun or an "imitation firearm."

Police later confirmed it was a replica firearm, meaning a pellet gun or BB gun, with which the teen girl was shot twice in the leg.

The girl was taken hospital in stable condition, police said. Police originally said she was 13, then later issued a correction for her age. No arrests have been made, police said. However, Patten told reporters, investigators believe they know the identity of a suspect in the case.
