Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth Star in High-Octane First Trailer for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”

Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Furiosa, the character played by Charlize Theron in 2015's 'Mad Max: Fury Road'

Anya Taylor-Joy has a scorching post-apocalyptic adventure on the horizon.

In the first trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the actress stars in the titular role, previously portrayed by Charlize Theron in 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. The new film's cast also includes Chris Hemsworth as a villain, with director George Miller returning.

According to a press release, the film is a "standalone action adventure that will reveal the origins of" Furiosa.

"As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus," according to a synopsis.

"Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home."

After she finished filming the project in Australia, Taylor-Joy, 27, told IndieWire in November 2022 about making the Mad Max installment.

"But I’m incredibly, incredibly proud of it, and so proud of all of the people I got to work with, and just the amount of love and effort and work that went into it. I’m excited to see it."

She joked that starring in Furiosa marked the “dirtiest and the bloodiest I have ever been," for a movie, "which is saying something, genuinely saying something."

“Any time I get to be dirty or bloody and not perfectly prim and pretty, I’m just having a ball, that’s where I feel most comfortable. So yeah, Furiosa was definitely right up my street," said the Split actress.

Mel Gibson starred in three Mad Max movies: 1979's original, 1981's The Road Warrior and 1985's Beyond Thunderdome. Tom Hardy starred opposite Theron in 2015's Fury Road, which won six Oscars in 2016 and was nominated for Best Picture.

After news of his casting back in October 2020, Hemsworth, 40, wrote on Instagram that he was "pretty damn fired up to be a part of a franchise that meant the world to me as a kid growing up in Australia."

"Mad Max was the pinnacle and a huge reason why I got into the business of telling stories," the Thor actor continued. "The fact that I'll have the honor of not only being directed by its original visionary in George Miller but also take part in Furiosa's origin story is incredibly exciting. Huge respect to George, Mel, Charlize, Tom and all the cast and crew who helped build this epic world. I'll do my best to continue the tradition of cinematic badassery."

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is in theaters May 24.
