Update 26/01/20: Michelle Obama Wins Grammy

The former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, can now add Grammy-winner to her already impressive CV.

Yes, as well as First Lady, lawyer, senior city council personnel, global education rights campaigner and author, Obama was awarded her first Grammy at last night's ceremony in Los Angeles.

The 56-year-old triumphed in the 'Best Spoken Word Album' category for the audiobook of her bestselling 2018 memoir Becoming.

Though Obama was in attendance at the 2019 Grammys, when she joined a bevy of impressive female music artists including Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga on stage, the mother-of-two skipped this year's ceremony.

Original Story: Michelle Obama Is Nominated For A Grammy

The 2020 Grammy award nominations were announced on Wednesday and a whole host of women who've blessed us with their music over the past year were recognised.

Lizzo - who has made 2019 her year in a multitude of ways - topped it all off with a whopping eight nominations including for the highly coveted categories of album, song and record of the year.

Ariana Grande, who floored us all with her soul-baring yet feel-good break-up anthem 'thank u, next' and then embarked on a mammoth tour, was also rewarded with a record of the year nomination for '7 Rings' and album of the year for 'Thank u, next'.

Billie Eilish too racked up nominations and broke a record becoming the youngest singer in history, at 17-years-old to receive nominations if the four main categories: song, record, album and best new artist.

But, there was also a surprise hidden among the incredible females shortlisted for the prestigious awards as former First Lady, Michelle Obama has also been nominated.

Why? You ask. Because as far as we're aware, the global education rights campaigner has not released a chart-topping album.

Except, she kind of has, in a different way.

Obama has been nominated in the Spoken Word Album category for the audiobook reading of her bestselling memoir, Becoming.

The autobiography topped book charts across the world when it was released. It tells the story of Obama's upbringing in Chicago, her university experience and successful careers in local government and law, meeting Barack Obama and becoming a mother of Malia and Sasha and offering an incredibly insight into her time in the White House plus the end of her husband's presidency and the start of Donald Trump's.

Obama reacted to the nod with a celebratory post on Instagram, saying she was 'thrilled' at the news.

'This past year has been such a meaningful, exhilarating ride... thank you for every ounce of love and support you've shared so generously,' she wrote.

It awaits to be seen whether the author will attend next year's awards ceremony but this year Obama did attend, making a surprise appearance in a sparkly jumpsuit to join Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, host Alicia Keys and Jennifer Lopez on stage.

Obama joins a whole host of famous names who have been nominated for this particular field. Her former president husband, Barack was awarded the prize for his audiobook in 2008. Last year, the prize went to another former president Jimmy Carter and the year before, the late Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher.
