Arlington Renegades fall 28-26 to the D.C. Defenders in an overtime thriller

The Renegades’ late-game comeback came up just short Sunday in a 28-26 loss to the D.C. Defenders at Audi Field.

The Renegades fall to 4-5 but remain in second place in the XFL South. The Defenders (8-1) remain in first place in the XFL North.

Renegades Kicker Taylor Russolino’s 27-yard field goal capped off a 17-point fourth-quarter comeback that would send the game to overtime.

In the overtime period, the Renegades would fail on all three of their scoring opportunities. The Defenders similarly failed on their first but connected on their second attempt, a pass from Jordan Ta’amu to Josh Hammond that would wind up being the game-winning play.

The Renegades rushed for 113 yards and De’Veon Smith scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to spearhead a successful rushing attack.

Quarterback Luis Perez had the best game for any Renegades quarterback, this season completing 31 of 41 attempts for 335 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The Renegades will return home to play the Houston Roughnecks at 2 p.m. Sunday at Choctaw Stadium (ESPN/ESPN+).
