Robert Cohen (The Big Bang Theory, Somebody Somewhere) and his brother, The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live‘s Joel H. Cohen are the creators of the comic superhero series.
We can reveal the 10-episode, half-hour animated comedy is currently in production ahead of a premiere date in 2025. It will be Crave’s first adult animation. Voice cast details are being kept under wraps for now, so we don’t yet know if Arnett, who voiced Batman in the Lego movies and the title character in Netflix’s Bojack Horseman, will feature.
The series will focus on the exploits of six little-known Canadian superheroes trying to save the world from evil giant robots, an unemployed octopus and needy hardware store clerks. The stakes are high for the stereotypically underdog Canadian super-unknowns, who are called in as Earth’s last resort when all other superheroes have been destroyed.
Showrunner Robert Cohen will serve as an executive producer along with Joel H. Cohen, Atomic/Thunderbird’s Jennifer Twiner McCarron, Matthew Berkowitz and Kristin Cummings, and Electric Avenue’s Arnett and Marc Forman. Thunderbird Distribution and Brands has global media and consumer products rights.
Bell Media original programming execs involved in the project include Head of Development Rachel Goldstein-Couto, Development Executive Alexis Mclaren, Sr. Production Executive Chris Kelley, Head of Production Sarah Fowlie, General Manager Carlyn Klebuc, Vice-President, Content Development & Programming Justin Stockman and Senior Vice-President, Content Development & News and Vice Chair, Québec Karine Moses.
“Distinctly Canadian original comedies have helped Crave build its brand, and with its sharp wit and clever Canadian-isms, Super Team Canada will fit right in,” said Justin Stockman, VP, Content Development & Programming at the streamer and its parent Bell. “This is the first animated series that Crave has commissioned, and we couldn’t ask for better partners than Will Arnett, Robert and Joel H. Cohen, Thunderbird Entertainment and Electric Avenue.”
Crave’s comedies include Letterkenny and its spin-off series Shoresy. The streamer recently teamed with New Metric Media to strike a deal with Letterkenny creator Jared Keeso, who will make nearly 50 episodes of spin-offs to the influential comedy and potentially other shows.
For Canadian-American Lego Masters host and actor Arnett, the news comes days after he, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes signed a deal reportedly worth $100M to transfer their podcast SmartLess from Amazon to SiriusXM. His production company, Electric Avenue, counts Peacock’s Twisted Metal, Fox’s Snake Oil and Netflix’s Murderville among its credits.
Vancouver-based Atomic Cartoons is known for Max series Young Love and has several credits on shows for Netflix, Adult Swim, Disney+, Hulu and Peacock among others. Max last year also boarded its futuristic comedy series Mermicorno: Starfall.
