Aubrey Plaza Wears Knife Barrette to "Child's Play" Premiere

Aubrey Plaza brought a little slice of horror to the red carpet when she wore a knife-shaped barrette to the premiere of Child’s Play. The eye-catching accessory was certainly an apt choice; the Parks and Recreation alum plays Karen Barclay in the 2019 remake of the 1988 film which tells the story of an evil, murderous doll named Chucky, who is hell-bent on terrorizing Aubrey’s character and her son.

Perhaps the one thing better than Aubrey’s knife clip is the fact that it completely contrasted with the rest of her outfit; the 34-year-old paired the barrette with a cheerful yellow floral dress, featuring billowing sleeves and a cinched belt. She finished off the look with bright red lipstick and a perfectly sleek cat-eye.

Hairstylist Clayton Hawkins is the mastermind behind the dramatic look, telling PopSugar that he often strives to find a “middle ground” between campy and “boring beauty.” Shortly before the premiere itself, which took place on June 19, Hawkins had an epiphany: “I was like 'OMG, what if I did a classic Hollywood blowout and had a tiny knife behind her ear?’”

As for the barrette itself, Hawkins told PopSugar that he found the piece — which looks like a sharp kitchen blade — on Vinca’s website, where it retails for $32. “Once Aubrey saw them, she was super down!” the L.A.-based hairstylist added.

Interestingly enough, Aubrey isn’t a big horror fan, as she told People in the days leading up to the premiere. “I think it was such an iconic character and I thought it was such a clever re-imagining of that character that I felt like, ‘You know what? Maybe I’ll just give this a whirl,’” the actor added, noting that the idea of technology as a villain is interesting to her. “I am so kinda paranoid about all of these smart devices and I really struggle with that a lot,” Aubrey explained. “The idea that, you know, we’re so reliant on these things and that I feel like they’re changing the way we think, and they’re changing the way we interact with each other.”
