Baby found dead in backyard of Fresno home, police say. Investigators seek more info

A lifeless baby found in a Fresno backyard kicked off a death investigation on Tuesday, police said.

A resident of a home on Backer Avenue between Tulare Street and Huntington Boulevard told police about 6 a.m. they stumbled across the body of an infant in their backyard, according to Fresno Sgt. Felipe Uribe.

Emergency crews arrived and found the baby had died. “There was nothing that could be done for the baby,” Uribe said.

The age, gender and name of the baby were not available, he said.

Investigators were working to determine if the baby was still alive when dropped in the yard or if it had expired and was left there, police said.

The residents of the home were speaking to police.

Uribe said the Fresno County Coroner’s Office would need to determine the cause of death before it could be ruled a homicide. He said that would likely not be completed until next week.

There has been no arrest connected to the death, he said.
