Banksy's flying reindeer highlight Christmas homeless plight

Elusive street artist Banksy has unveiled a new Christmas art installation, that seeks to highlight the plight of homeless people in Britain.

The feature appeared on a wall in the English city of Birmingham on Monday (December 9), and was shared on the artist's Instagram page with a caption.

It tells the story of a homeless man named Ryan - who was given a hot drink, two chocolate bars and a lighter from passers-by.

Ryan then takes a sip of his drink before laying on a street bench - painted to resemble Santa's sleigh - reindeers and all.

Locals say it has inspired hope in difficult times.

The two reindeer gained red noses in the hours after the mural was unveiled.

A protective fence has since been put in place to stop any other additions to the art.

The number of homeless deaths hit a new high in the UK last year. Homelessness has been increasing in England for nearly a decade.
