Petit-Cap smokehouse fire called arson by RCMP

Swords stolen as Stephenville Crossing home is vandalized

The fire that destroyed a smokehouse in Petit-Cap on May 10 was deliberately set, according to the RCMP.

The police issued a statement on Wednesday asking for the public's help in solving the arson case.

"The investigation to date indicates the fire would have been set deliberately," the statement said.

The smokehouse, located on Rue due Quai, had not been used for "some time," according to Cpl. Alain LeBlanc.

Police were called to the scene at about 5 a.m., he said.

The fire happened about a week before the latest smokehouse fire that destroyed the Cormier Brothers's smokehouse in nearby Cap-Pelé.

That fire caused between $3 million and $4 million in damage to three buildings. The company says it plans to rebuild the smokehouse and be ready for next season.

Correction : An earlier version of this story indicated the smokehouse was located in Bas-Cap-Pelé, based on information provided by the RCMP. Police later issued a correction, saying the smokehouse was actually located in Petit-Cap.(May 20, 2015 1:15 PM)
