Bee’s prep football predictions: Fireworks expected between Clovis and Sanger?

Big game looms between the Clovis and Sanger high football teams this week.

The Bee’s 10th-ranked Apaches (1-0) and No. 12 Cougars (1-0) meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Lamonica Stadium.

One thing Apaches coach Matt Logue noticed about the Cougars this time around is that they’re big up front and physical.

And he said Clovis sophomore quarterback Deagan Rose is “poised” after playing against him last season in a 14-7 loss.

“He’s got a freaking cannon for an arm,” Logue said.

Clovis coach Aaron Wilkins was as complimentary towards the Apaches saying they’re a tough team that reminds him a lot of then-coach Chuck Shidan era.

“Play their tail off,” he said. “They get to the ball defensively and they’re just physical.”

The Apaches offensive line could be a problem led by Jonathan Ybarra.

Sanger’s offensive line, right, takes on Dinuba in the second half Friday, Aug. 18, 2023 in Sanger. Final score, Sanger 41, Dinuba 7.

Wilkins took note of that.

“Their offensive line is humongous,” he said. “(Ybarra) has a great motor and finishes his blocks. We’re gonna have to really control him if we want to have a chance in this one because once he gets going, he kind of, he can be very disruptive.”

Logue said this is an important test for his team because they have other tough matchups coming up.

He preaches 1-0, just like other coaches would for their team.

“Just trying to get our guys prepared as much as possible,” he said.
