Bill Maher, HBO Sued by Laura Loomer After Real Time Host Implies That She ‘Might Be’ Sleeping With Trump

Laura Loomer has filed a defamation lawsuit against Bill Maher and HBO after the Real Time host implied that the former Florida congressional candidate was involved in an extramarital affair with former president Donald Trump.

The suit stems from comments made during the Sept. 13 edition of Real Time. “I think maybe Laura Loomer’s in an arranged relationship to affect the election because she’s very close to Trump,” Maher said. “She’s 31, looks like his type. We did an editorial here a few years ago… it was basically, who’s Trump f–king? Because I said, you know, it’s not nobody. He’s been a dog for too long, and it’s not Melania. I think we may have our answer this week. I think it might be Laura Loomer.”

The complaint argues that the defendants, “as alleged herein, broadcasted numerous false, misleading and defamatory statements to severely harm and damage” the plaintiff, and that these “false and misleading statements were broadcasted with actual malice, as Defendants knew that they were false and misleading, and/or at a minimum acted and published with a reckless disregard for the truth.”

Loomer, a far-right internet personality who was previously banned by Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for spreading misinformation, is seeking $150 million plus punitive damages. TVLine has reached out to HBO parent company Warner Bros. Discovery for comment.

Trump himself was asked at a Sept. 13 presser about his close ties to Loomer. “Laura’s been a supporter of mine, just like a lot of people. She speaks very positively of the campaign,” the former president said. Presenting himself as puzzled by the intent of that question, he affirmed, “I don’t control Laura, she says what she wants. She’s a free spirit.”
