Billie Eilish on What Made Her Realize She’s “Been in Love With Girls for My Whole Life”
Billie Eilish is getting real about coming out on the world stage.
The Grammy winner—poised to release her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, on May 17—teased one of her new songs, “Lunch,” at Coachella. With lyrics like “I could eat that girl for lunch / And she dances on my tongue / Tastes like she might be the one,” Eilish’s sexuality is front and center.
Now, in a new interview with Rolling Stone, she opened up about the pivotal role the song played in helping her come to terms with liking girls.
“That song was actually part of what helped me become who I am, to be real,” the singer said. “I wrote some of it before even doing anything with a girl, and then wrote the rest after. I’ve been in love with girls for my whole life, but I just didn’t understand—until, last year, I realized I wanted my face in a vagina.”
Eilish contemplated the realities of having to come out as one of the world’s biggest pop stars, lamenting the lack of control around her own narrative. “I was never planning on talking about my sexuality ever, in a million years,” she continued. “It’s really frustrating to me that it came up.”
The “What Was I Made For?” singer previously opened up about her attraction to women in an interview with Variety last November. “I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real,” she said at the time.
She later told the outlet that she hadn’t intended to come out in that specific interview. “I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious’? I didn’t realize people didn’t know. I just don’t really believe in it. I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist’? I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops,” she said. “But I saw the article, and I was like, ‘Oh I guess I came out today.’ OK cool. It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, but it’s cool that they know.”
