From Billy Porter’s Glittery Eyes to Elle Fanning’s Old Hollywood Red Lip, a Look at the Best Beauty Moments at the 2024 Tony Awards
The mood was celebratory and the beauty looks were mostly classic at this year’s Tony Awards at the Lincoln Center in New York City — think Old Hollywood-esque red lips, light pink hues and soft waves, though some bold looks from the likes of Billy Porter and Cynthia Erivo weren’t to be missed.
While bold lips haven’t been as much of a staple on the red carpet, they had a big moment at this year’s Tony’s. Winner Sarah Paulson, whose look was done by makeup artist Gita Bass, and Elle Fanning, both spotted at Kelli O’Hara and Arian Moayed’s after party at Pebble Bar, sported bright red lips, giving off an Old Hollywood vibe. In the same vein, host Ariana DeBose’s look, crafted by makeup artist Vincent Oquendo, was inspired by Audrey Hepburn and featured a strong winged liner and a petal pink pout. “Stereophonic’s” Juliana Canfield, theater producer Jordan Roth and “Sex Lives of College Girls” actress Alyah Chanelle Scott wore deeper hues, evoking a slightly more Gothic feel.

On the flip side, soft, minimalist pinks were in for many. “The Outsiders” producer Angelina Jolie had rosy lips, while Rachel McAdams wore a similar shade on her lips and cheeks. Many, including Idina Menzel, Jessica Lange and Taraji P. Henson, wore shades a bit more nude though still with a touch of pink. While the looks were more minimal, they were the ideal soft, balletcore-esque glam that Hollywood seems to love at the moment.
Similar to this year’s Met Gala, many, including Fanning, “Cabaret’s” Gayle Rankin and “Stereophonic’s” Sarah Pidgeon, opted for soft waves or curls. The ‘dos were styled to look perfectly tousled, though they managed to last all night and likely into the early hours of the morning, as the stars flocked to their respective after parties. On the flip side, Brooke Shields and Julianne Hough wore their hair parted down the middle with strands neatly tucked behind their ears for a slicked back feel.
Furthermore, with Rankin, Hough and Paulson all going for the cut, it seems ultra-short bobs cropped well above the shoulders are having a moment.
While the looks were heavy on classic beauty, there were a few surprises. For example, Alicia Keys sported a structural topknot, while Erivo’s manicure was a must-see, as per usual — think hot pink and turquoise stiletto-shaped nails. Porter’s glittery smoky eye, sparkly lips and diamond hair accessory weren’t to be missed either.
