B.C. man’s tiny cabin becomes Internet darling

It would appear that the Internet had a hankering for adorably small things in beautiful places because a post titled “Gabriola Island Cabin” made it to the front page of Reddit on Monday.

The post features images of a charmingly tiny cabin along with step-by-step photos of the structure being built from the ground up. The author of the post and man who built the cabin, Sam Fujiyama, says the entire home cost just $11,000 in materials.

Price wasn’t the only motivation for building small — Fujiyama didn’t want to have to deal with any building permits. Regional bylaws state that no permits are needed for accessory buildings under 108 sqft, so he kept his structure just below that cutoff.

The house has a tiny kitchen (no running water!), a little wood stove to stay warm in the relatively mild West Coast winter, and a charming loft sleeping space with windows on three sides.

Fujiyama says he had no workshop or proper tools when he started and that the entire thing was a learning experience.

“There is so many great sites out there now, and videos for doing almost everything,” writes Fujiyama in a comment on Reddit. “I really don’t think i would have been able to do something like this without youtube.”

The final product is as quaint as it is impressive, and looking through the step-by-step photos, it’s hard not to get inspired.

“I often shake my head when i look at it because i’m sometimes not sure how it did this,” writes Fujiyama. “It was a lot of weekends, but every moment was enjoyable, even the difficult ones.”
