Jimmy Kimmel asks what gluten is, and, shockingly, no one seems to know

We’ve all heard it a hundred times. “You still eat gluten!?"

"Oh my gosh, don’t eat gluten!”

“A gluten-free diet is the way to go!” and so on.

But let's be honest; who among us actually knows what gluten is? Take your best guess. Something to do with wheat?

As explained by registered dietician Katherine Tallmadge, gluten is a "protein in wheat and some other grains, such as rye and barley," that helps give foods like bread their structure.

More and more people claim to be sensitive to this protein, which can be a sign of a more serious health condition called celiac disease. Yet according to a new study, many don't get tested. What many do, however, is go on a gluten-free diet.

In response, avowed lover of gluten-rich pizza Jimmy Kimmel decided to call people out on their lack of nutritional knowledge, especially those who claim to live gluten-free. So he sent a camera crew to a popular exercise spot in L.A. to ask people a simple question: “What is gluten?”

He also played a fun little game with the audience, asking them to predict if the person on-screen actually knew what gluten was or not.

Naturally, no one seems to know! Some of these self-appointed nutritionists don't even have a clue. The one thing they all "know?" That it's bad for you. Why? Usually because someone told them so.

Though some knew the types of foods that contain gluten, all of them failed to define what it actually was.

Each of the people interviewed were asked if they maintained a gluten-free diet, to which they all promptly and proudly answered yes. But when asked what gluten was, the respondents awkwardly stumble on their words, trying (and failing) to sound smart on camera.

Even ‘Jewish John Hamm,' as Kimmel calls him, doesn't have an answer. After proudly naming the myriad things he doesn’t eat, he says it's something to do with wheat, but that's the best he can do. At least he saves face by laughing it off.

He certainly fares better than the jogger who "hasn't researched it to the fullest." Her friend is "reading a book about it."
