Scary clown epidemic hits Norfolk, England

Don't mind those clowns stalking the streets; just pretend they aren't staring at you maniacally.

That's the message police in King's Lynn, Norfolk are telling residents during what media has dubbed a scary clown "epidemic" of wig-wearing, grimacing clowns chasing people down the street.

Metro U.K. reported police have had to respond after residents reported people dressed as clowns were trying to frighten them as they passed. No one has been hurt, according to the BBC, but the number of nightmares resulting in cold sweat wake-ups is unknown at this time.

Police told media residents should ignore the clowns because they're obviously seeking attention. Officers have said they will find the clowns and advise them to stop terrorizing Norfolk, according to the BBC, but there isn't much they can do because clown disguises, terrifying or not, are perfectly legal.

The clown posse follows an incident in September when someone began dressing up as a clown and popping up in the streets of Northampton, U.K. The Northampton Clown began taunting residents via a Facebook page to spot him around town.

The BBC reported there were also clowns spotted various Northern Ireland towns.

LiveScience recently reported about a mysterious group of clowns that terrified residents of Massachusetts in 1981. Though children had reported on several occasions that clowns inside a van had offered them candy, police never found the creepy clan and it is still unclear how much of the story was myth grown from the rumours of frightened parents.
