Happy Anniversary: Norway wants to give Finland a mountain

It’s nice to have friendly neighbours. Just consider what Norway is considering doing for Finland in order to commemorate its 100th anniversary of independence.

Bjorn Geirr Harsson, a retired worker with the Norwegian Mapping Authority, recently launched a campaign on Facebook to move Norway’s eastern border so that the peak of the Halti mountain can become part of Finland, Independent reports.

“We would not have to give away any part of Norway,” Harsson told The Local. “It would barely be noticeable. And I’m sure the Finns would greatly appreciate getting it.”

For a country that has nary a mountain peak to call its own, this is a big deal.

Harsson proposed to shift Norway’s border by 20 metres, meaning the total amount of land lost would be no more than 0.05 square km, RT reports.

“I was taken aback on why on earth they had not received this peak,” Harsson told The Local.

This is apparently not the first time this proposal has been raised. Harsson, reportedly, concocted the idea back in 1972.

Although it was rejected then, he now says it would be the perfect gift to celebrate Finland’s 100th anniversary of independence from Russia in 2017.
