myTask iPhone case lets you carry scissors, wrench and screwdriver with your phone

An "Urban Tools" version of the myTask iPhone case is shown in this handout photo.

Remember those old infomercials for knife sets, extolling their many uses? "It slices, it dices, it makes julienne fries!" That may be the first thing you think of, too, when you see this new iPhone case.

A KickStarter campaign is underway for one of the more curious smartphone cases I've come across, the myTask. The series includes three different versions: the myTask Urban, myTask Bike, and myTask Stash, and all three are a little strange, but very intriguing.

The myTask series doubles as a protective case for the smartphone as well as storage for small items. This in itself isn't entirely revolutionary and new; an iPhone storage case called Eyn is already available. The major difference is Eyn opens to the side on a hinge while myTask Stash, the empty case you can fill with what you want, has a drawer that slides out.

What's most remarkable about the case is what they've managed to pack inside of it.

The other two models of the case, the myTask Bike and myTask Urban, have both been designed to accommodate a plethora of tools for busy bikers or urbanites. The bike version includes a whole host of tools to take with you on the road, including an assortment of wrenches and a tire iron. If you're as skeptical of the physical strength of these tools as I am, you can check out this video TaskLab made to convince us nonbelievers. All the tools are made from 1.5mm thick Hardened 440C stainless steel.

I found the contents of the myTask Urban to be even more surprising: In the case, they have managed to fit a nail file, pen, memory card, mirror, tweezers, bottle opener, light, three types of screwdriver, ruler, scissors, and a touchscreen stylus. Several of those things are tools designed to serve multiple functions but nonetheless, it's pretty impressive.

TaskLab says the cases are fully TSA compliant and are both relatively light: The Urban is 65g and the Bike is 80g.

There's still two weeks left in the KickStarter campaign and they're still about $17,000 away from their fundraising goal, so we'll have to wait and see if a final myTask model does make it to production. Nevertheless, it's still a cool idea, and likely one that will be more refined as we become more attached to our mobile devices.
