‘Downton Abbey’ star Rob James-Collier shaves his head

What would Lord Grantham think of his valet's new haircut? Rob James-Collier, better known as "Downton Abbey's" resident trouble maker Thomas Barrow, surprised his fans on Monday by turning up to an event for the PBS show with his famous jet-black mane shaved off.

The 36-year-old British star showed off his new 'do as the "Downton Abbey" cast posed for photos in North Hollywood before a talent panel Q&A at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre.

According to Deadline, the event was designed to "drum up some Emmy enthusiasm for the Masterpiece costume drama/soap." Discussion was dominated by show creator Julian Fellowes, who is set to start work on a new PBS series, "Gilded Age." (The fourth season of "Downton Abbey" returns Jan. 5, 2014.)

"The question is how long will they wait for 'Gilded Age,' and when will 'Downton' finish up, and we just don’t know those answers right now,” he told the website.

As for the answer to why James-Collier cut off his hair, that has not yet been revealed. However, the actor did appear earlier this year in the British BBC series, "Moving On," in which he sported a shorter haircut while playing a substitute teacher.

"I’m not really aware of how I look," he told the Radio Times in late 2012. "All you have to do to be an actor is to be competitive, so you stay in shape and work as hard as you can and try to improve as an actor.”
