Still 20+ cm of snow to come over northern Quebec, Labrador

A harsh dose of winter reality is hitting Quebec this week, with northern sections of the province in line to see as much as 30 cm of snow by the time all is said and done.

Across the south, less snow is expected, but the Thursday morning commute will still be a little dicey. Drivers are urged to take caution as the wintry weather lashes the province.

Wednesday into Thursday

Snowfall warnings continue Wednesday for persistent snowfall across the Gaspe Peninsula. An additional 15 to 25 cm of snow is expected into Thursday morning.

A stubborn low that has already brought between 5 to 20+ cm of snowfall to the province earlier this week has stalled over the mouth of the St. Lawrence, which will add to the snow piling up in the northeast.

By Wednesday evening, winds will be problematic as well, gusting between 60 to 70 km/h, and greatly reducing visibility.

"Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult in some areas," says Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in the snowfall warning for the region. "Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Adapt your driving to changing road conditions."

Further east along Quebec’s north shore, over 40 cm of snow may accumulate inland, inching into southern regions of Labrador. Snowfall warnings also span Upper Lake Melville, Eagle River and Norman Bay to Lodge Bay, with 10-25 cm expected there, and heavier totals expected over higher terrain.

Consequently, a section of Highway 510 in Labrador was closed earlier Wednesday morning due to blowing snow conditions. It has since been re-opened.

Drivers are being urged to check the current travel conditions before heading out, as changeable weather is in store.

Quebec's immediate north shoreline on the other hand is expected to receive heavy amounts of rain as temperatures hover above the freezing mark. Rainfall warnings were issued, with additional rainfall amounts 10-30 mm expected into Wednesday evening. By 4 a.m. on Wednesday morning, the Natashquan airport had already received 65 mm of rain, with 20+ mm reported at the Chevery airport.
