Calgary golfers get one more bonus weekend, but cold swing on the way

Get your bonus rounds in now, Calgary, a temperature swing is on the way.

Last weekend, above-average temperatures allowed the city of Calgary to re-open two of its golf courses for “winter golfing” for the first time ever. City-owned Shaganappi Point and Maple Ridge golf courses re-opened for play on temporary greens November 10-13 after formally closing in October.

And, like a 300-yard drive, the move was a huge hit.

“We sold out both courses, all four days in 20 minutes,” said Golf Course Operations Lead John Faber.

“We had about 1100 people go through the two properties.”

But while Mother Nature has been playing in a fair way so far this November, that course is set to change next week. Starting early in the week, a cold front will move into the prairie region, resulting in at or below par temperatures for Calgary.

Golfers can expect at or below-freezing temperatures to continue into the last week of November, so they’re best to take advantage now.

Faber isn’t ruling out opening the course again should Mother Nature play nicely, though.

“If we see some double digits, my team will throw this on the table, and we could have a go,” he said.

“It could be December; it could be January. Let’s see what those chinooks bring this winter.”
