Call the Midwife star Cliff Parisi has revealed he caught hypothermia during “difficult” filming conditions.

The BBC show returned earlier this month for its 13th series, with this week’s (February 4) scenes seeing the characters head to the beach for some relaxation.

Filming the scenes proved to be anything but therapeutic for the crew, however, with Storm Agnes wreaking havoc as the scenes were shot back in September.

In an interview with The Mirror, several cast members recalled their experience of filming during the extreme weather, with Parisi revealing he caught the worst effects.

“Everything was going sideways,” said the actor, who plays Fred Buckle on the show. “The wind was unbelievable, it was so cold. I was wearing a shirt with a hanky on my head. I managed to keep the hanky the whole time - but I got hypothermia in the end.

“They had to take me off set. I had to warm up, I couldn’t go back on. We’d done most of it by that point. It was a laugh, but it was difficult to film. Things were flying all over the place. Hair and make-up gave up and ran for cover.”

“One of the crews did as well, we had two cameras then we had one. There was sand in everything,” he concluded, with co-star Annabel Apsion also recalling her version of events.

“It was a nightmare for continuity but in the end they just gave up and said ‘we can’t do anything’,” she revealed. “The weather had been fantastic just before we shot and was again just after we shot. But while we were actually there it could not have been worse. It was hysterical.”

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
