Centre County teams combine for 7 District 6 wrestling champions as regional tournaments up next

The first step toward the PIAA wrestling championships came to an end Saturday as the District 6 Championships ended.

Centre County’s five teams combined to crown seven district champs, with 13 grapplers making the finals. There was an all-county final at 107 pounds in Class 2A.

Bald Eagle Area had all of the Class 2A kings with three. State College collected four Class 3A winners.

Twenty-three wrestlers, including those three champs, will be back in Altoona in two weeks for the PIAA Southwest Regional. The Little Lions’ four title winners will be joined by three other teammates in next week’s PIAA Northwest Regional, also in Altoona.

Here’s a deeper look at how the district tournament ended for all five Centre County teams:

Recap: The Little Lions nearly replicated their success during last year’s District 6 Class 3A Championships.

They collected five champions last year. This year they had four, with three of those repeating.

Manville, Cunningham and Pavlechko were those repeating champions. James Whitbred was the fourth title winner.

“It was a good tournament. There’s matches we wish we would have won. Most of our guys wrestled pretty well,” State College coach Ryan Cummins said. “We’re not quite there yet, but we’ve got a couple more weeks. Hopefully, we’ll push a bunch through looking ahead. We’re trying to go one weekend at a time.”

Pavlechko and Cunningham recorded nothing but bonus points during their title runs.

Pavlechko pinned his way to his title and wrestled a total of 1 minutes, 43 seconds. He stuck Hollidaysburg’s Wyatt Maines in 56 seconds in the finals.

It turned out to be the Indiana commit’s 100th career win, too.

“It’s pretty cool, but there’s still things to do. This is just a small part of the journey,” Pavlechko said. “It’s a small milestone, so yeah, it’s pretty cool, but definitely still a lot of things to do in the future.”

Cunningham began his title run by pinning Hollidaysburg’s Aiden Schenk in 1:00. In the finals, the Penn State commit racked up a 23-8 technical fall on Mifflin County’s Deakon Schaeffer in 5:27.

“I just kept working, focused more on neutral and focused on scoring points this time. I just look at it as another match for the state tournament,” Cunningham said. “I got to get through this. The state tournament is what I’m worried about.”

Manville had a pin to open his title run too, but received an injury default from Central Mountain’s Luke Simcox in the finals. It was a match that the fans in attendance had been looking forward to.

James Whitbred continued his phenomenal rookie campaign by earning his first district title.

He opened in emphatic fashion with a 17-0 technical fall in 4:00 of Central Mountain’s Jaggar Pardoe. Whitbred followed that up by dominating Mifflin County’s Kamden Everly, 5-1, in the finals.

“I’m pretty excited. It feels really good. I was a little nervous going into that match, but it felt pretty normal, like another match,” Whitbred said. “It definitely puts some confidence in (me) as I go forward. I feel it shows me what I need to work on to get better to improve, and beat the better kids as the competition gets better.”

Whitbred beat Everly about a month ago in the dual, 3-1, in sudden victory. Cummins feels that in that short time frame, it shows how Whitbred has grown.

“He wrestled really well, smart and smooth. He’s not near his top yet,” Cummins said. “I think if he wrestles well here, we could see him keep going on here for a couple of weekends.”

Coates was one of those other three wrestlers joining his champion teammates. He entered the district tournament with a 6-13 record.

After pinning Johnstown’s Nick Toranto in 1:42 to open his tournament, he was sent to the consolation bracket after being pinned by the eventual champion in Central Mountain’s Aiden Kunes. Coates responded by collecting an 8-0 major decision, and topping Hollidaysburg’s Logan Krupka, 5-2, to secure his regional spot.

“We are happy for him. He had a nice tournament. He wrestled tough,” Cummins said. “He’s had an up- and-down season. It seems like he’s coming on here at the right time. I hope he can continue with it, and have a nice tournament next weekend.”

Bald Eagle Area

Team score: 2nd, 195.5 points

Champions: Tanner Guenot (107 pounds), Caden Judice (114), Caleb Close (189)

Regional qualifiers: Lucas Fye (3rd, 127), Dawson Lomison (4th, 133), Mason Reese (3rd, 145), Gavin Bennett (6th, 152)

Other placewinners: Cameron Dubbs (8th, 172 pounds)

Eliminated: Liam Purcell (3-2, 121 pounds), Gage Gardner (1-2, 215), Eric Clark (1-2, 285), Kayson Tice (2-2, 139, Friday), Shawn Knepp (0-2, 160, Friday)

Note: Coach Ron Guenot was inducted into the District 6 Hall of Fame.

“It’s exciting. It’s a combination of just being around so many great people, my family, my wife, my kids, my mom and dad, the guys that coach with me and our coaching staff,” Guenot said. “I have been lucky to have great people around me, and that’s what it’s all about, that’s why we’ve been successful. You can’t do this job with without having great people around you. Bald Eagle wrestling is a family, and that’s what we try to drive home with the kids. It’s been a great experience.”

Recap: The Eagles had a perfect finals round as all three of there finalists came away with titles.

Tanner Guenot continued the dominance that former BEA wrestler Coen Bainey had at the lower weights.

He took on P-O’s Caleb Hummel in the finals, and didn’t seem to have any troubles. Guenot used a takedown in the first period and an early reversal in the second period to top Hummel, 4-1.

Guenot said, “It shows how hard we work in the room trying to prepare for all these tough tournaments in the postseason. My partners Caden Judice, Mason Reese, Dawson Lomison, and a lot of guys have helped me get to where I am and win a tournament like this. I’m looking forward to regionals.”

Judice took on Marion Center’s Griffin Tinsman, and trailed 2-0 early as Tinsman picked up a takedown midway through the first period.

Judice responded to take a 3-2 lead before the period ended. He added an escape in the second, and another takedown in the third to secure a 6-2 win.

The sophomore felt his experience in winning a Louisiana state title last year as a freshman helped him Saturday.

“I think it helped me a lot because like wrestling on the big stage out there, nothing can compare to the first time I stepped out there to go win a state title, that was really exciting. It was really nerve- racking (in Louisiana),” Judice said. I know sometimes winning can get a little bit too much on me. I start worrying a lot, so I’ve been focusing on letting it fly, try not to worry about winning and worry about scoring points.”

Close, who was named the Outsanding Wrestler, took on a familiar foe in Huntingdon’s Andrew McMonagle in his finals matchup. The pair have been training partners.

They squared off in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference finals, where McMonagle came away with a 6-3 win. Saturday night saw Close flip that around into a 5-2 victory for him, and his second straight district title.

“It’s definitely been on my mind a lot. I was excited to wrestle that match. I kind of had some fun, but definitely got to keep working,” Close said. “I kind of feed off it, and want to work harder. I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been doing, and get better.”

Friday’s action

The Eagles had a wrestler entered at every weight, and have 11 of the 13 still alive.

Four of the Eagles’ semifinalists are at the light weights, which have been key to the team’s success this season, and a return to the PIAA dual championships.

Judice, Fye and Lomison had to get two wins to make the semis as Tanner Guenot needed just one. They all scored bonus points on their path, too.

Fye pinned his way to the semis with his quickest, putting Juniata’s Cody Nipple on his back in 37 seconds in the second round. Lomison opened his first postseason tournament with a pin, and followed up with a 12-0 major decision over Mount Union’s Jacik Hess in the quarterfinals.

Judice opened with a pin, and used a 4-2 win over Cambria Heights’ Hunter Jones to make the semifinals. Tanner Guenot had an 18-1 technical fall over Forest Hills’ Logan Moss in 5:23 during his lone match of the day.

“Those guys have competed at a top level all year long. They need to keep that going, and they did that today,” Coach Guenot said Friday. “I’m expecting the same thing from them tomorrow. They’re definitely tough kids down low for us. Hopefully, they’ll get us started with some momentum (Saturday) morning.”

Close had a pair of pins to make the semifinals like Fye.

Even with the five semifinalists, Coach Guenot felt there should have been a couple more.

Reese, Bennett, Dubbs, Gardner and Clark all made the quarterfinals before being sent to the consolation bracket. Purcell collected the first win of the day for the Eagles, and has a done a good job working his way back through the consolation bracket.

“It was a mixed bag. We thought maybe we could sneak another guy or two into the semis there,” Coach Guenot said. “It didn’t happen, but we got to look forward, and go after whatever the next best thing is for our 11 guys that are still in.”

Penns Valley

Team score: 3rd, 170.5 points

Champions: None

Regional qualifiers: Conner Myers (6th, 107 pounds), Erik Carlile (5th, 114), Jack Darlington (4th, 121), Tripp Watson (5th, 127), Colten Shunk (2nd, 133), Brayden Lisowski (4th, 145), Ty Watson (3rd, 152), Ethan Fetterolf (5th, 160), Shane Rimmey (6th, 189)

Other placewinners: Zach Rummel (7th, 139)

Eliminated: Landen Hess (1-2, 285), Robert Martin (2-2, 172 pounds, Friday)

Recap: The Rams had just one finalist in Shunk, but they were able to secure nine regional qualifiers, which is a program record.

However, they had to finish out the day without head coach Joel Brinker, who ended up going to the hospital after the morning session was over.

“They handled it well. Having nine regional qualifiers is pretty impressive. I don’t think we’ve ever done that before, so the guys wrestled their tails off,” assistant coach Mike Wise said. “I think they all fed off each other, and fed off the situation. They all did everything we asked of them and had pretty good tournaments.”

Shunk ran into a buzzsaw in Bishop McCort’s Mason Gibson in the finals. However, he wasn’t scared of the Penn State commit.

Gibson raced out to a 6-3 lead, but Shunk was able to secure a takedown to trail 7-5 after one period. Gibson went on to beat Shunk, 23-9.

“We saw him at the LHACs, and got teched in the first period. He kind of got overwhelmed. We said, ‘Just go out wrestle your pace and your match,’” Wise said of Shunk. “He stood toe to toe with him. He defended stuff, and got in on his stuff. He took him down, and made an exciting match, so that’s what it takes to go with the best.”

Friday’s action

Brinker was smiling from ear to ear after his squad’s performance.

When the seedings were completed, they had four wrestlers slated in the top six, which is how many wrestlers qualify for the regional tournament. Penns Valley exceeded expectations on the first day.

“I’m very proud of the whole group. Even the guys that aren’t here, they pushed these guys. We’ve got a lot of guys back home that aren’t even wrestling in this tournament,” Brinker said. “For the last two weeks, they’ve wrestled just as hard to prepare these guys. I give them a lot of credit here, too, so I want to give them some praise.”

Darlington, Shunk, Ty Watson and Fetterolf were those four wrestlers earning a top-six seed. Lisowski and Carlile were No. 7 seeds, but each pulled off upsets of the No. 2 wrestler to make the semifinals.

Carlile used a late reversal in the third period to top United’s Jacob Sombronski, who was a district champ two years ago, 2-1. Lisowski dominated Westmont Hilltop’s David Ray in an 8-4 victory.

Fetterolf, who was No. 6, picked up an upset of his own when he picked up a 10-6 win over Huntingdon’s Grady Clark, who was No. 3.

“It was nice. This is the third time this season (they’ve faced off), and for him to stick with it and get the W,” Brinker said, “I’m happy for him. He’s a regional qualifier, that’s a big goal of his.”

Darlington, Shunk and Ty Watson did what they have done all year — dominate their opponents.

Darlington and Ty Watson pinned their way to the semifinals. Darlington’s quickest came in his tournament opener, 42 seconds over Bellefonte’s Nolan Weaver.

Watson’s fastest also was in his tournament opener against River Valley’s Eli Morcheid in 1:45.

Shunk opened with a 16-1 technical fall in 4:57, and made the semifinals with a 5-1 win over United’s Colton Henning.

“We knew this quarterfinal round could go either way. Everybody was in good matchups across the board,” Brinker said Friday. “The kids showed up and wrestled hard.” We’re excited for tomorrow to see if we can push a few more through.”

Rummel had quite the up-and-down day of all the Rams’ wrestlers.

He appeared to have had a pin of the No. 5 seed in Forest Hills’ Isaiah Shilcosky, but ultimately lost 13-8. In his consolation second-round match, he trailed Richland’s Easton Robertson, 5-1, after two periods of wrestling.

The third period saw Rummel tie the bout up to force sudden victory at 6-6. He then locked up a cradle on Robertson for a pin in 5:19.

“A gutsy performance, he just kept wrestling hard,” Brinker said. “Good things will happen if you go hard, and that’s what he did.”

Bellefonte

Team score: 6th, 127.5 points

Champions: None

Regional qualifiers: Wyatt Long (3rd, 107 pounds), Cameron Garcia (6th, 127), Ezra Swisher (3rd, 139), Noah Weaver (2nd, 145)

Other placewinners: Jackson Long (7th, 152 pounds), Jack McHail (7th, 160), Luke Hockenberry (8th, 189)

Eliminated: Nolan Weaver (1-2, 121 pounds), Quinn Park (3-2, 172), Gavin Lucas (2-2, 133, Friday), Logan Rarrick (1-2, 215, Friday), Ian Valimont (0-2, 285, Friday)

Recap: It’s safe to say that the Red Raiders handled the district tournament well even though a bulk of the lineup was experiencing it for the first time.

“Based on district dual standings, I think we were 13, so personally I set a goal of us finishing in the top 10. Everyone tried to wrestle above their seeds, and try to move as many guys on as possible,” Bellefonte coach Mike Maney said. “I think for the most part we wrestled above our seeds. The guys were aggressive. The younger guys got a taste of this weekend and the meat grinder it is.” Hopefully, they take lessons from it and start preparing tomorrow for next year.”

Noah Weaver was the lone Bellefonte wrestler to make the finals, and was one of the more experienced ones too. He faced Bishop McCort’s Jackson Butler, who was a late addition as starter Sam Herring was unable to compete.

Butler had takedowns in every period three alone in the third to secure a 13-4 major decision.

“He wrestled really well. The semis may be his best match of the year. He couldn’t quite get going there in the last match, so that’s something we’ll have to revisit,” Maney said. “We got some time to prepare for regionals. He’s certainly capable of beating anyone on any given day, so a lot of positives for him, but back to work for regionals.”

Friday’s action

Wyatt Long, Ezra Swisher and Noah Weaver all collected bonus points in their two matches to get to the semifinals.

Long had a pair of pins with his quickest coming in the second round, when he put Richland’s Chase Pollino on his back in 1:04. Swisher didn’t have a single point scored on him as he opened with a 16-0 technical fall.

Then he had an 8-0 major decision over Juniata’s Ryder Smith in the quarterfinals. Noah Weaver had a pair of technical falls, giving him 14 on the year.

He outscored his opponents 33-1 in 5:22 of combined wrestling.

Cameron Garcia opened with a 2-0 win, and topped Mount Union’s AJ Chilcote, 5-1, to make the semifinals.

Regional qualifiers: Caleb Hummel (2nd, 107 pounds), Marcus Gable (2nd, 139), Nate Fleck (5th, 145)

Other placewinners: Averi Gable (8th, 114 pounds), Ace Foster (7th, 121)

Eliminated: Connor Guenot (1-2, 127 pounds), Haydn Kephart (3-2, 152), Colton Chapman (1-2, 160), Matthew Rowles (3-2, 172), Hunter Kephart (0-2, 133, Friday), Connor Eichenlaub (2-2, 189, Friday), Evan Eichenlaub (2-2, 215, Friday)

Recap: The Mounties opened the day with three regional qualifiers and the chance of six others to join them.

However, those three wrestlers in Hummel, Marcus Gable and Fleck were the lone guys to be moving on.

“(Friday) I thought we had a tremendous day, all the kids wrestled really tough. Coming into day two, you have the best of the best in the district wrestling. You have to be on your game every single match,” P-O coach Justin Fye said. “We have three guys moving on. We had five guys place. I thought we could maybe get a few more guys moving on, and a couple more guys placing, but it’s just how it goes. If we wrestle again next week, it could be different.”

Hummel and Gable each made the finals.

Hummel suffered a 4-1 loss to BEA’s Tanner Guenot.

Gable had to face off with the best wrestler in the country in Bishop McCort’s Bo Bassett.

Bassett recorded five takedowns in the first period to race out to a 10-4 lead. In the second period, Bassett got another takedown and two sets of nearfall points to hold an 18-5 lead.

The third period he opened with a takedown 11 seconds in to secure the 20-5 technical fall.

“Caleb wrestled a really good match. I felt like we had a takedown the first period of that finals match. It would’ve made a big difference in what was going on with the rest of the match,” Fye said. “I thought we had good movement on bottom getting to our feet a lot. I thought Marcus had a great day as well. Wrestling the best kid in the country, he didn’t back down at all. I didn’t expect anything less than Marcus not to back down from anybody, but he did a good job moving his feet there.”

Friday’s action

The Mounties had five wrestlers make the quarterfinals, so to go 3-2 in the round isn’t too bad, especially since the losses came to wrestlers ranked top-15 in the state.

Hummel, Marcus Gable and Fleck have been steady all year long, so it’s no surprise they made the semifinals.

“I think all three of our semifinalists controlled their matches. There were a couple of close ones, but I felt like we were in control every time,” P-O coach Justin Fye said.

Hummel and Fleck had to wrestle two matches to Marcus Gable’s one. Gable should’ve had two, but his second-round opponent, Glendale’s Ryder Krise, was taken out of the gym on a stretcher after his first-round match ended by disqualification due to a slam.

Hummel opened with a fall in 46 seconds. He shutout the Rams’ Myers, 6-0, to make the semifinals.

Fleck opened with a pin, too. Then, he topped Forest Hills’ Chance Gorzelsky, 4-1, in the quarterfinals.

After Gable received his forfeit in the second round, he pinned United’s Michael Monty in 4:27 to make the semifinals.

“The guys wrestled really well today. It went almost exactly what we kind of thought,” Fye said Friday. “We actually thought we’d get all the guys wrestling into tomorrow. Two out of the three guys that aren’t making it to (Saturday) lost close matches.”

Averi Gable and Foster were those other two quarterfinalists.

Gable suffered an 8-3 loss to Marion Center’s Griffin Tinsman, who is ranked No. 15 in the state by PA Power Wrestling. Foster was pinned by Bishop McCort’s Lincoln Sledzianowski, who is No. 5 in the state, in 3:01.

Chapman was well on his way to being a sixth Mountie in the quarterfinals against Cambria Heights’ Marshall Eckenrode. Chapman was leading 6-1 midway through the second period.

Eckenrode got to within 6-4 after the period was over. He opened with an escape in the third period, and used a takedown with just under 30 seconds remaining to win, 7-6.

“I didn’t see Colton losing that match in the round of 16. We were in good position there. We just kind of stopped wrestling for a little bit,” Fye said. “He’s wrestled that kid a lot of times growing up, so there’s maybe a little more pressure there. Colton is somebody that has a short-term memory, he’s able to move on and get ready for that next match or period.”
