Champions League: Frankfurt fans clash with police in Naples

Hundreds of Eintracht Frankfurt fans clashed with police in violent scenes in Naples last night, despite being banned from the second leg of their Champions League tie against Napoli.

Footage that circulated on social media before Wednesday's last-16 match - which the home side won 3-0 - showed fans of the German club setting cars alight and throwing missiles, including flares, while clashing with police and Napoli fans.

There were also reports of Napoli fans attacking buses carrying Eintracht supporters as police tried to escort them through the streets in the city centre.

The violence ensued despite Frankfurt fans being banned from attending the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after a series of arrests were made following unrest before the reverse fixture in Germany last month.

Eintracht Frankfurt, who appealed the ban of their fans before the match, have not commented on the clashes.

A statement on the club's website on 7 March said: "Eintracht Frankfurt was informed late last night by UEFA that the Italian ministry of the interior is this morning going to issue an injunction against SSC Napoli, whereby the club is prohibited from selling tickets to Eintracht Frankfurt supporters for the UEFA Champions League round of 16-second leg on Wednesday 15 March.

"This would also include the total away allocation of 2,700 tickets, of which 2,400 are in the away section, which Eintracht Frankfurt is entitled to under UEFA regulations."

Eintracht fans who made the trip reportedly had tickets to the game bought on their behalf by followers of Serie A club Atalanta.
