Based on a True Story star Chris Messina has given his thoughts on the shock ending to the comedy-thriller series and addressed whether or not they'll be a follow-up season.

The show saw Messina and Kaley Cuoco (Flight Attendant, Big Bang Theory) star as down on their luck married couple Nathan and Ava, who create a true crime podcast starring a local serial killer.

However the ambitious plan ultimately backfires in the final episode when the couple's new podcast partner ends up killing one of their friends.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the episode, Messina revealed he'd be up for a second season should the opportunity occur.

"I was happy to think, 'Oh, maybe we get to do more and I could explore going even darker and further into the kind of vortex with Nathan'," he said of the episodes' cliffhanger ending.

While the series is yet to receive a renewal, Messina believes there's certainly more to explore with the characters and how they adjust after finding themselves covering up a murder.

"I think there’s so much more room to explore even more of a Bonnie and Clyde aspect of these characters," he added.

"That they get so in over their head, but even just drunk with power; drunk with feeling like they’re finally doing something. And again, it’s incredibly stupid and ridiculous and dark. But that would be interesting to explore.

"But I always kind of wonder how far you can take these characters and how far I would be able to take Nathan into the darkness."

In its four-star review, Digital Spy called the series absurd and addictive, writing: "It helps that the series knows how stupid it is. While it does make some valid points about an industry that's taking advantage of our interest in the crime genre.

"The show never takes itself overly seriously, and isn't phased about leaning heavily into its own outrageousness."
