Coronation Street confirms break for Alan Halsall after surgery

Coronation Street favourite Alan Halsall is stepping away from the ITV soap for a short while.

Portrayer of mechanic Tyrone Dobbs since 1998, the soap star went into hospital for ACL reconstruction surgery last Friday (November 3), repairing a ligament in his knee, meaning he'll need a period of recovery time over Christmas.

A spokesperson told OK!: "Alan will be on screen in the coming weeks as we film two months ahead, and then he'll be taking a short break whilst he recovers."

In an Instagram announcement, Halsall himself informed his followers: "ACL Reconstruction surgery [check]. Well, on Friday I underwent ACL reconstruction surgery.
I have been told the surgery went really well.

"I know I have a long 9-12 months of rehabilitation ahead of me but I'm sure with the support of family and friends I'll get there. Thank you to the amazing staff at Oaklands and also thanks to my very own nurse @missdrewmerry93."

He received messages of support from colleagues and fans, with Samia Longchambon amongst them joking: "Rest up. Holler if you need some grapes."

This news comes after the actor spoke about a huge twist on the horizon for his character Tyrone, involving grandmother Evelyn Plummer. Since reuniting with his estranged mother Cassie Plummer, the two have gradually grown apart - with trouble undoubtedly on the way.

"Although Evelyn keeps saying Cassie's going to bring problems to the door, Evelyn is about to do something which causes them all huge problems. And Tyrone then tries to pick up the pieces of the family," teased Halsall.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
