Coyotes not tracked by province like bears

Sightings of coyotes should be reported to municipalities as the animals are not a species provincial officials track, the Ministry of Natural Resources said.
"Some municipalities collect information regarding coyote sightings," a MNR spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
Some people who live in rural areas outside of Thunder Bay, such as Murillo, reported on social media last month that they had been seeing coyotes, which are usually slightly smaller and leaner than wolves.
The province does monitor black-bear activity, however, and has a special hotline where bruin sightings can be reported.
Coyotes have been a particular nuisance in the Greater Toronto Area, where there have been reports about the animals scavenging household garbage or attacking small dogs.
The City of Toronto has a dedicated page about coyotes on its website.
Though the MNR doesn't officially monitor coyotes, it advises people not to feed them, especially when they wander into residential areas.
More information about how to avoid contact with coyotes is available online at ontario.ca.
The province's hotline for reporting bears is 1-866-514-2327.
