A cold-hearted American killer who gunned down his father-in-law said sorry and begged for forgiveness before being executed by lethal injection.

William Sallie had spent nearly 30 years on death row for killing his John Lee Moore and shooting his mother-in-law after his wife left him, moved back in with her parents, and demanded custody of their son.

Killer Sallie cut his in-laws’ phone lines, broke into their house and shot the couple while they were in bed, during the attack in 1990.

He also took his wife and sister hostage at gunpoint before giving himself up to police.

Before his execution in Georgia, USA, Sallie pleaded with remaining family members for their forgiveness.

“I just want to say I’m very, very sorry for my crimes. I really am sorry,” he reportedly said, according to the Mirror.

“”I’m just very sorry for everything. I do ask for forgiveness.”

The execution took place on Tuesday.

Sallie was the ninth person to be executed by Georgia this year, the highest of any American state.

His case has been winding through the American legal system for years.

His first conviction and death sentence were overturned, a second trial followed and after being convicted again, his lawyers tried, unsuccessfully, to take the case to the US Supreme Court and have a third trial.
