Cyclist dies after being struck — 3rd deadly crash on Sacramento roadways in 12 hours

A cyclist who was struck Tuesday morning at a North Natomas intersection died from his injuries, the third fatal vehicle crash involving a non-motorist in the city in less than 12 hours.

Police and firefighters were called to the crash involving a vehicle and a bicycle at a stop sign about 7:30 a.m. at Club Center and Banfield drives in the Natomas Park neighborhood, according to authorities.

The cyclist, a male of an unknown age, was struck and taken to a hospital where he later died, according to police.

The victim’s identity was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once relatives were notified of the death.

Councilwoman Lisa Kaplan, who represents the Natomas area, noted that her office was aware of the crash and said that police were investigating.

“Please drive, bike & walk safely as there has been 3 deaths in the city these past 24 hours between vehicles & bike/walkers,” Kaplan added, referencing another fatal cyclist collision in south Sacramento, as well as a fatal pedestrian crash outside of Arden Fair mall that both occurred Monday night.

The driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators, the Sacramento Police Department said. Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash, the agency said.
