Dara O Briain has called out a news report for "misquoting" one of his stand-up routines about Strictly Come Dancing, saying his jokes really had an "almost completely different meaning".

The comedian who hosted Mock the Week spotted a story about himself in the Mail Online, where it was claimed he had vowed never to take part in Strictly.

Quoting a report in The Sun about O Briain's appearance at the Paddy Power Comedy Festival in Dublin, the Mail Online claimed that he had revealed he had turned down a place in the Strictly cast during his show.

But O Briain tweeted: "Exciting to see the Daily Mail today misquoting a comedy routine of mine, as a news story. I’m sure it will get lost amidst proper celebrity gossip but let me just clarify I said nothing they quoted, I said slightly different things with an almost completely different meaning."

He also added of the article which referenced a show he performed in Dublin: "I love “According to a new report” which is actually “On Thursday night, in a tent in the Iveagh gardens”."

O Briain had been reported to be joking about trying to discipline his 15-year-old daughter using the threat of appearing on BBC One's dance contest.

He was quoted as saying: "I've been reduced to saying 'stop it, stop it' in this disciplinary battle - 'stop it, or I will go on Strictly Come Dancing and you will watch me dance. I will dance hard and I will get to Latin week. I will cha cha cha!'.

"I can never do the dancing show. That will never happen."

The Mail Online also included comments O Briain was said to have made about the notorious Strictly Curse, which has seen some celebrity contestants leave their partners after appearing on the show, most famously comedian Seann Walsh who split with his girlfriend Rebecca Humphries after being spotted kissing dance partner Katya Jones.

He was quoted as joking about threatening his daughter with bringing a Strictly film crew to her school and was quoted as saying: "I told her I'll shout 'hunny, look over here - watch me dance and say hello to your new mummy'.

"Strictly Come Dancing is everywhere in the world. But Britain is the only country in which the celebrities f*** the dancers."

Carol Vorderman also retweeted O Briain's post about the article, adding: "Daily Mail misquoting @daraobriain...Well there's a thing Remember don't go clicking on their article or you're adding to their profit... Just a thought."
