Deluge brings month's worth of rain, floods Melbourne, Australia

Those residing in Melbourne, Australia, were warned on Dec. 14, 2018 to remain indoors and avoid floodwaters following a severe storm that brought a deluge to the city, resulting in flash flooding in the eastern suburbs.

Local authorities had received 515 calls for help from across Melbourne in six hours and cars became stranded on the Hume Freeway as a result of a month's worth of rain that fell in a single day.

Meanwhile, communities across Victoria's north end were hit with flash flooding that inundated homes and stranded motorists.

Rainfall totals were excessive throughout the region -- 80 mm of in Wangaratta, 180 mm in Everton, which resulted in the stranding of 100 motorists in fast-rising floodwaters on the Hume Freeway. Seventeen were rescued by helicopter.

Birchip, located in the state's northwestern section, was hit with 130 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period, flooding 20 homes as a result.
