Doctor Who spoilers follow.

Doctor Who has unveiled the trailer for its upcoming Christmas special, 'The Church on Ruby Road'.

Following the conclusion of the 60th-anniversary specials, the show returns on Christmas Day (December 25) to see Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa begin his adventures as the Fifteenth Doctor.

In the exciting new teaser, the newest Doctor meet his companion Ruby Sunday (played by Coronation Street's Millie Gibson) in a bustling nightclub. As well as delving into Ruby's backstory and family life, the episode will see the pair face their first set of monsters — kicking off with an angry horde of goblins.

Speaking to Radio Times, producer Russell T Davies revealed how shows like Stranger Things and The Witcher inspired him to lean into a more fantasy-inspired episode.

"I was just a bit jealous that all those other shows were getting a bigger taste of the pie, so this Christmas the enemy is goblins," he said.

"The show is taking a sly step towards fantasy, which will annoy people to whom it's a hard science-fiction show. Episode two next year is wildly fantasy. Completely making up scenarios on-screen that we've never been able to show before. But the following episode is proper hard science-fiction."

Gatwa's first trip in the TARDIS will also mark the sci-fi show's first Christmas single. Whovian's will be treated to a new original track called 'The Goblin Song'. "We're releasing this as an early Christmas present for everyone," Davies enthused.

"And if you want to see how the Doctor and Ruby escape from the Goblin King at the end of the song, you'll have to watch on Christmas Day!"

Joining Gatwa and Gibson for the festive special are Michelle Greenidge, Angela Wynter, Anita Dobson and Davina McCall — who will be playing herself.

'The Goblin Song' is available from December 11 on BBC Sounds, Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer.

Doctor Who's 'The Church on Ruby Road' will air on Christmas Day (December 25). The show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere.
