Driver Following 'Shortcut' Recommended by Google Ends Up Stranded on Mountain for 3 Hours

A 23-year-old man got stranded on Strawberry Peak in Utah — and claimed Google was to blame

A driver got stranded on a Utah mountain late at night after a supposed "shortcut" ended up being anything but that.

On Thursday, July 4, a 23-year-old man found himself stuck on Strawberry Peak in Wasatch County, Utah – and it took several hours for him to get rescued, according to a Facebook post by Wasatch County Search and Rescue.

After receiving a 911 call from the stranded motorist stuck in his Toyota Turcell, the man claimed his route was the “shortcut that Google recommended,” according to the post.

It took the Wasatch County Search and Rescue team three hours to safely assist getting the driver back down the mountain, authorities said.

The driver did not sustain any injuries during the ordeal.

A Google spokesperson tells PEOPLE in a statement that "safety is a top priority, and whenever possible we aim to route drivers on paved roads."

"While our investigation has not yet identified roads in Maps that lead to this location, we'll make any necessary updates to accurately route local drivers," the spokesperson adds.

This isn’t the first time a navigation tool has been blamed for a trip that didn’t end with the driver reaching their intended destination.

Last year, there were two separate instances where tourists drove their car into a Hawaii harbor just weeks apart. In both instances, the drivers drove down a boat ramp at Honokohau Harbor, later telling cops they were just taking the route GPS suggested.

One driver reportedly thought the water was a puddle, Hawaii News Now reported at the time.
