Dua Lipa’s Best Sketches and Songs From 'Saturday Night Live'

On Saturday, May 4, Dua Lipa was both the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. The musical star kept up with her comedic colleagues in a number of funny sketches throughout the night as well as performing her hits “Illusion” and “Happy For You.”

In her opening monologue, Lipa shouted out her parents, Anesa and Dukagjin, who were seated in the studio audience.

“It’s great to be back in 30 Rock,” she said. “I actually made my U.S. TV debut eight years ago, downstairs on The Tonight Show. So this building does feel a lot like home. And especially tonight, because my parents are here in the audience.”

She continued, “As you can see, they’re kind of cool. They love to part. One night, I was out with my friends and we ended up at the club at 3 in the morning. And who do I bump into but my parents! Which was embarrassing. Because the last thing you want to see when you’re super high and drunk off your ass is your daughter.”

For her first sketch, Lipa was paired with cast member Ego Nwodim as “two baddies from Task Rabbit” who are hired to add producer tags on a single from rapper Young Spicy. They start with compliments like “Ooh, Young Spicy got that heat,” but then things take a turn with moaning renditions of “Young Spicy in the closet for sure” and “L-L-Let go of my arm, Spicy, that hurts!” and “Take a seat, Spicy, my name is C-C-Chris Hansen.”

In “The Anomalous Man,” Lipa is a character in Victorian-era London who is in love with a deformed playwright played by Sarah Sherman who she eventually catches texting other love interests.

Finally, the Kendrick Lamar and Drake rap beef is being dissected on the Greenville Morning Show.

In a somewhat bizarre ode to Luca Guadagnino’s film Challengers, Lipa plays a woman with a Sonny Angel dolls obsession that her horrified date only discovers upon entering her apartment.

“They’re companions for 25-year-old working women,” she tells him. And though she loves them, only one of them could compete with a real man. That Sonny Angel doll is played by Bowen Yang, who jumps into the competition.

In a pre-recorded commercial sketch, Lipa extolled the virtues of a “big-ass aluminum tray of Penne alla Vodka,” explaining that it is “beloved by none, but tolerated by all…because it’s not that good, but it’s not that bad either.”

In a final sketch, Lipa was able to combine her comedic timing with her singing as she helped pitch a catchy jingle for a flooring company.
