Dumpster fire near SLO Blues game was likely sparked by a stray firework

A dumpster fire on the grounds of Sinsheimer Elementary School, which started during Thursday evening’s Fourth of July fireworks display, was likely caused by a stray firework.

The fire was reported at 9:11 p.m. to the San Luis Obispo Police Department, a watch commander told The Tribune.

Video of the fire was posted to X Thursday evening by San Luis Obispo photographer Owen Main, who said the fire was started by something that wasn’t part of the official San Luis Obispo Blues fireworks show.

“It was pretty packed out on the school field,” Main said. “As soon as the Blues fireworks started, one person shot one off over by the classrooms off the grass field, and then there was another one that got shot off on the asphalt there too.”

Main said he saw people climbing on the roof of Sinsheimer Elementary, but was glad to see that the building was not damaged.

The fire was extinguished by Cal Fire firefighters around seven minutes after it started, according to emergency services app Pulsepoint.
