Emmerdale's Amy Walsh shares "downside" to soap role

Emmerdale star Amy Walsh has reflected on her the hardest part of her job, admitting she's been struggling living away from her family.

Walsh, known for the role of Tracy Robinson on the ITV soap, has revealed the "only downside" to her soap job.

She recently explained she finds it hard living in Leeds — in the area where the show it's filmed — with her husband, former EastEnders star Toby-Alexander Smith, and their daughter Bonnie, while her mum and sisters are in London.

"That's literally the only downside to my job," she told her husband on ITVbe's Drama Queens, offering insights into the lives of soap stars. "I'm so close to my mum, like I can't believe I don't see her for weeks on end. I'm gonna cry..."

"I didn't like it at Christmas when it felt like she didn't know Bonnie as well even though she did. But before she was seeing her every day," Amy continued, with Toby-Alexander comforting her: "It's totally normal to feel like that."

She added: "I'm so busy and constantly feel like a rubbish sister, a rubbish friend, a rubbish daughter and all that. It sounds so dramatic but it's just ... it's actually juggling my work, the distance and now being a mum."

During a confessional, Walsh praised her husband for being there for her, saying: "It's funny with Toby because he's so good emotionally at being there for me. It's just really important for me to have that sounding board."

The show also showed a sweet reunion between Walsh and her mum Diane in London, with the actor saying it was the first time she'd be meeting her mum on her own since having Bonnie.

"I had to go down to London for some work commitments so I managed to very conveniently tie it in with seeing my gorgeous mum. And that was just amazing because I don't think in the two years that I've had Bonnie I have seen my mum on my own."

While Diane and Amy's older sisters Sally and Kimberley are very understanding, she said she can't help but feel sad about the distance between them.

Speaking with her mum, she said: "It's a hard one, I was talking to Toby the other day actually, because we feel so settled and so happy to be back in Leeds but then it comes with, obviously, the sadness that whenever I tell you or my sisters, like, that I'm happy living in Leeds, you're all like, 'How happy? How long is this gonna be?' It's a small price to pay for doing a job that you love," she concluded.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
